UUSC - Transforming Values into Action in Haiti
One of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee's core values is to advance human rights and social justice. The UUSC works in partnership with local grassroots organizations around the world that struggle to undo unjust power structures and oppressive policies. Eighty percent of Haitians live in rural areas where there has been little international or governmental aid to support them following the earthquake. The Papaye Peasant Movement in rural Haiti is one local organization that has received assistance from the UUSC in the form of shelter, food and cash for work programs. One work program is protecting potable water sources in five villages - work that is not only providing a livelihood but also helping local babies and children who are routinely made sick by gastrointestinal infections.
The Papaye Peasant Movement's goals in building a sustainable recovery in Haiti include:
- Providing food and work for earthquake survivors, by way of integrating displaced people into work plans throughout the country and creating jobs in rural sectors.
- Increasing food production and food sovereignty in the recovery and redevelopment process.
- Protecting the environment as an integral part of agricultural development, through reforestation and renewable energy initiatives.
Chavannes Jean-Baptiste, director of the Papaye Peasant Movement expressed gratitude for the UUSC's support and solidarity in the wake of the earthquake. He characterized the UUSC and the Papaye Peasant Movement as "brothers and sisters working together" highlighting a partnership model in action.
