On 18 Jan 2010 Julie Leach, second from left, received a MLK Service Award in the name of our church for our commitment to the children and youth in the Newtown community. This award represents many years and volunteer hours of church members standing up for desegregation of schools, working at the Helen Payne Day Nursery, marching in the MLK celebration parade, attending the MLK breakfast, speaking at City Commission hearings about redevelopment in Newtown, working to change conditions in our Public Housing system, and many other initiatives.
2010 MLK Service Award Honorees: Fredd Atkins (District 1 Commissioner, City of Sarasota), Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota Social Justice Committee (co-chair Julie Leach accepting award), Valerie Buchand (Community Activist and Advocate for Public Housing Residents), Jean and Hank Battie (Community Volunteers and Humanitarians). Mr. Adair Ford (Community Volunteer and Humanitarian) also was an honoree, but was missing from the MLK Celebration, and is not in the photo.
